Why Age Doesn't Matter When Learning Punjabi or Sikhi

Most language or religious-studies programs for kids sort students by age first and ability second — a seven-year-old goes in the "7-9" class regardless of what they actually know. We do the opposite, and it's not a gimmick. Here's why, and what it actually looks like.

Age tells you almost nothing useful

A ten-year-old raised in a home where Punjabi is spoken daily can already hold a conversation. A ten-year-old raised somewhere it wasn't might be starting from zero — same as a forty-year-old who grew up the same way. Age-banding puts both ten-year-olds in the same class and assumes they're at the same point. They almost never are.

What we do instead

Every student goes through the same five levels — Noor Foundation through Noor Mastery — in every subject they take, regardless of age. Everyone starts at Level 1 unless they take a short placement test and show they're already past it. A class might genuinely have a seven-year-old and a grandparent in it together, both working on the same material, because that's where they both actually are.

Does mixing ages actually work in a live class?

Yes — because the thing being taught (reading Gurmukhi, reciting kavita, learning an instrument, understanding Sikh history) doesn't require students to be developmentally similar, the way, say, a school maths curriculum does. It requires them to be at a similar point in that specific subject. A class stays small (4 to 10 students) specifically so a teacher can keep instruction relevant to everyone in it, whatever their age.

What this means for your family

If you've got kids of different ages, or an adult in the house who never got the chance to learn growing up, you don't need to find three different "age-appropriate" programs. Everyone enrols into the subject and level that actually fits them — and if two or more students from the same family enrol together, the whole order is 20% off.

Curious where you or your child would actually place? Most students start at Level 1 — there's no written exam to begin. If you're confident you're already past it, a short multiple-choice test can place you higher.
